A native of the waters of the western Atlantic and the Gulf of Mexico, the blue crab is voraciously devoured across the U.S. In Maryland, where I used to live, it is the "state crustacean," whatever that means, and its largest commercial fishery. These fisheries have declined, owing to overfishing and environmental pressures.

Surprisingly, the blue crab is one of the few fisheries that is predicted to flourish under climate change, as the warming allows for better breeding conditions and increased likelihood of winter survival. It is not clear if this increased crab population will negatively impact the surrounding ecosystems...
